IMMUNOGENETICS OF JUVENILE CHRONIC ARTHRITIS (JCA)

Ingrida Rumba,
Clinic of Pediatrics, Medical Academy of Latvia, Dzirciema iela 16, Riga, LV 1007 LATVIA.
Proc. Latvian Acad. Sci., Section B (LATVIA, ISSN: 1407-009X), Vol. 50 (1996), No. 2, pp. 57-63. Language: English.

Abstract: The immunogenetics of juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) is reviewed. The structure of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) associations with pauciarticular, polyarticular and systemic subtypes in different populations are described, along with immunogenetical methods used for their study (serological, cell, oligonucleotide methods). The strict occurrence of HLA associations with each of DQB1*0402, DQA1*0401, DRB1*0801, DPB1*0201, A*0204, A*0206, A*0207 in cases of pauciarticular disease variant, and also HLA-DRB1*0408 and HLA-DRB1*0404 associations in cases of seropositive JCA, shown in many studies, imply the participation of these alleles in disease pathogenesis. Their genetic role in the mechanism of the disease is polygenic.

Proc. Latvian Acad. Sci., Section B (LATVIA, ISSN: 1407-009X), Vol. 50 (1996), No. 2, pp. 64-73. Language: English.

Abstract: The old and new data about peptide T, an oligopeptide fragment of HIV envelope protein gp120, a powerful cytoprotective agent against toxic actions of gp120 (neuroAIDS), are reviewed. Comparative analysis of protein structures, inducing toxic and neurodegenerative effects, reveals common active centres in gp 120 and in bacterial and viral superantigens. Peptide T and related sequences are constituents of these centres.

Proc. Latvian Acad. Sci., Section B (LATVIA, ISSN: 1407-009X), Vol. 50 (1996), No. 2, pp. 74-77. Language: English.

Abstract: We have cloned and sequenced the cDNAs encoding the variable regions from the heavy (VH) and light (VL) chains of a monoclonal antibody (mAb) 13D3 which reacts with the linear epitope 141-STLPETTVV-149 within the core protein of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and comprises the carboxy-terminal part of the serologically different hepatitis B e antigen. The variable (V) region structural data on mAb of defined specificity is needed to gain insight into the fine structure of the antibody combining site.

* Institute of Immunology, Medical Academy of Latvia, Dzirciema iela 16, Riga, LV-1007 LATVIA.
Proc. Latvian Acad. Sci., Section B (LATVIA, ISSN: 1407-009X), Vol. 50 (1996), No. 2, pp. 78-81. Language: English.

Abstract: A rare combination of two connective tissue diseases, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) subtype II and juvenile psoriatic arthritis, is described. Methods used for diagnosis were clinical, observation of the patient for 9 years, genealogical, and morphological. A combination of two inheritance types was observed in the patient: autosomal dominant and polygenic. MHC genes, which are localised in the 6th chromosome, commonly cause development of arthritis, a common symptom of both diseases. The genetic determination of arthritis is polygenic.

SKELETAL MUSCLE CONTRACTION FORCE IN ISCHEMIA IN MAN

Peteris Ozolins, Liga Plakane and Inese Blumberga,
Latvia Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine, O.Vaciesa iela 4, Riga, LV-1004 LATVIA.
Proc. Latvian Acad. Sci., Section B (LATVIA, ISSN: 1407-009X), Vol. 50 (1996), No. 2, pp. 82-84. Language: English.

Abstract: In 18 healthy men and women, the thenar muscles (m. adductor pollicis and m. flexor pollicis brevis) were stimulated by brief trains (0.33 s) of electrical impulses (0.1 ms duration, 100 Hz) every 2 s. After arrest of muscle blood supply, the contraction force gradually decreased; however, 56+-8 s later a transient increase of muscle contraction force by 56+-11% for 38+-6 s was demonstrated in 13 of the 18 persons. When 30 s complete tetanic contraction was performed, one min after arrest of blood flow in arm, the fatigue index, which shows the muscle working capacity, was significantly increased to 82+-3%, compared to 69+-3% in control conditions. The data suggest that there are physiological mechanisms by which skeletal muscle working capacity in ischemia is transiently increased.

IMPACT OF FERTILIZERS ON NUTRIENT LOSSES THROUGH TILE DRAINS IN LATVIA

Juris Stikans, Vilnis Kazocins and Inara Lipenite,
Latvia State Research Institute of Agriculture "Agra", Skriveri-1, Aizkraukles rajons, LV-5126 LATVIA.
Proc. Latvian Acad. Sci., Section B (LATVIA, ISSN: 1407-009X), Vol. 50 (1996), No. 2, pp. 85-89. Language: English.

Abstract: Effects of lime and fertilizer application on plant nutrient discharge in drain water have been investigated in a long-term fourteen-year (1981-1994) field experiment. It was estimated that fertilizer application causes leaching losses of most nutrients. However, fertilizer application for crop yields reaching 3.0-4.0 t/ha of grain does not result in plant nutrient inputs to drain water exceeding environmentally permissible limits.

DATA BANKS FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF LATVIA'S SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Erika Tjunina and Janis Kristapsons,
Scientometrics Research Group, Latvian Academy of Sciences, Akademijas laukums 1, Riga, LV-1050 LATVIA.
Proc. Latvian Acad. Sci., Section B (LATVIA, ISSN: 1407-009X), Vol. 50 (1996), No. 2, pp. 90-95. Language: English.

Abstract: An information system consisting of several data banks has been created. The data banks contain sufficiently complete information about Latvia's science and technology as of the years 1980 to 1995. This allows to obtain statistics data on the scientific and technological potential of Latvia, carry out analysis of the principal scientific trends and schools, and evaluate the contribution of separate scientists and institutions to Latvia's science.
Key words: data banks, scientific and technological potential, SCI-included publications, inventions, citation, Latvia's science, Latvia's technology.
