The Institute was founded in 1946 as the LAS Institute of Energetics and Machine-Building. The first Director of the Institute was L. Hunhens, Professor of the University of Latvia, but from 1947 to 1970 the Institute was headed by K. Plaude, Full mem. AS; from 1970 to 1989-by A. Krogeris, Full mem. AS.

As a result of the reorganization of the recent years, 12 laboratories function at the Institute, and the Latvian Technological Centre was founded in 1993 embracing 32 firms, mainly connected with the scientific research areas of the Institute of Physical Energetics.

Main Areas of Research

Main Results of Research

  1. Methods have been worked out for drawing up the balance of fuel and energy supply, for imitation and optimization of this balance suitable for Latvia. The forecast analysis model of the demand side of the energy resources' balance is based on macroeconomic parameters. The supply side optimization model of the fuel and energy balance has been developed by adaption of the model for optimization of the energy use technology elaborated in co-operation with the European Union. Experimental optimization calculations for Latvia's major energy sectors for the period up to 2010 have been prepared (Regional energetics analysis and optimization (V. Zebergs).
  2. A mathematic programme complex has been accomplished for designing low voltage networks. The programme complex has been introduced in enterprises of the networks of Latvia's energy supply systems (Z. Krisans).
  3. Comprehensive research on the optimization methods of heat supply system development has been conducted taking into account the primary energy resource supply as well as the economic and ecological changes. Results of the research have been used in projects of the Institute's Energy Efficiency Centre on rational use of primary and heat energy resources, on perfection of the audit and monitoring methods (N. Zeltins).
  4. The possibilities of using alternative energy resources were investigated, the technical and economic indices were determined for the potential use of those resources in Latvia. New types of wind generators and those for the small hydro-electric power stations have been designed. Adaptation of new types of mathematical models has been made for assessing the possibilities using traditional and alternative energy resources (P. Sipkovs).
  5. New methods have been worked out and semi-conductor converter circuits developed for improving the electric energy quality and efficiency of rational use (J. Stabulnieks).
  6. Technology for making permanent magnets by using polymer binding material has been developed. This enables to obtain relatively cheap magnets with sufficiently good magnetic properties. By using rapidly cooled powders of the Nd-Fe-B system, composite materials with the maximum energy of 46 kJ/m2 have been developed. A modernization programme of the electric drive systems for the Ventspils radiotelescope RT-34 has been evolved (Z. Sika).
  7. By making use of the nuclear reactor at the Laue-Langeven Institute (Grenoble, France), research work was continued on the new effect-non-elastic scattering of neutrons in ultrasound flux. In Si monocrystals 7-8 ultrasound phonons with the frequency of 73 Mhz have bee discovered. For the first time in ultrasound flux non-elastic scattering was discovered in monocrystals (Kbr) of mosaic form (J. Jolins, Cor. mem. LAS).
  8. On the base of organic molecules of dipolar betaine-type new Langmuir- Blodgett multilayer structures have been developed, their electronic and optical properties researched, and theoretical models have been evolved for the description of electronic and optical non-linear processes in these systems (E. Silins, Full mem. LAS).
